Anxiety

What is anxiety?

It’s normal to feel anxious from time to time, like before you make an important decision or give a speech. But if you experience excessive and persistent feelings of fear and worry that seem impossible to control, you may have an anxiety disorder.
Karma Doctors & Associates treats many types of anxiety disorders, including:

1- Generalized anxiety disorder

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) includes excessive worry about day-to-day activities and events to the point that it affects you almost every day for six months or longer. GAD often occurs with other anxiety disorders or depression.

2- Social anxiety disorder

Sometimes called social phobia, this anxiety disorder involves fear of social situations. You may avoid social interaction due to fear of embarrassment or concern about what others think of you.

3- Specific phobias

A phobia is an intense fear of a specific situation or object. Some of the most common phobias include fears of flying, blood, and heights. Though many people feel nervous in response to these situations, a phobia causes uncontrollable fear that exceeds the actual danger.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

Depending on the type of anxiety disorder you have, you may experience a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Feeling restless or tense
  • Muscle tension
  • Increased heart rate
  • Rapid breathing
  • Sweating or trembling
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Feeling weak or tired

You may be so focused on the thing you’re worried about that you can’t concentrate on important tasks, like work and self-care. If these symptoms interfere with your daily life, Karma Doctors & Associates can help.

How is anxiety treated?

Anxiety disorders can seriously reduce your ability to function at work or school, as well as in your personal life. Fortunately, these disorders are highly treatable. The team at Karma Doctors & Associates thoroughly evaluates your specific condition and then works with you to develop an individualized treatment plan to reduce your anxiety symptoms.

Treatment for anxiety typically involves medication management, therapy, or a combination of both. For your convenience, the team provides both in-office and telemedicine treatment options. They can communicate with you confidentially while you remain in the comfort of your own home.

If other treatments don’t improve your anxiety symptoms, your Karma Doctors & Associates provider may recommend transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate nerve cells in your brain and improve your anxiety.
